The Portland Timbers hope a return home will get them back on the winning track after a 2-1 loss at Real Salt Lake on Wednesday night.

The Timbers (9-5-3, 30 points) can move into first place with a win over Los Angeles FC on Sunday night coupled with a Seattle Sounders' loss or draw, as both teams have 30 points in Major League Soccer's Western Conference. Seattle has played one fewer match.

The Timbers' six-game undefeated streak, including five straight wins, ended in Utah. But forward Felipe Mora has four goals in the past four matches and leads the Timbers in goals this season with seven.

The Timbers also have yet to beat fourth-place Los Angeles FC, with a loss and draw in the previous two meetings this season.

""We have to bounce back," Timbers head coach Giovanni Savarese said. "We have to make sure the guys recover. Now, we have a tough match against LAFC, always difficult games when we play against each other. We're preparing accordingly to have the players ready to play them at home."

LAFC (7-7-3, 24 points) is looking for consistency in a season that has seen them win no more than two games in a row at any point. They're coming off a 2-1 loss to the Vancouver Whitecaps in Portland last Wednesday, in which they trailed 2-0 at halftime.

LAFC hopes for a better outcome on the same Providence Park pitch Sunday. They will be without at least four players, including leading goal scorer Diego Rossi, who continues his quarantine after returning from international duty with Uruguay.

Rossi is back to practicing but has to do so away from the team. The team was missing a total of seven players against Vancouver and turned to a number of youngsters in the lineup.

"It is a crazy year. You can spend all your time complaining about things, but that doesn't get you very far," LAFC head coach Bob Bradley told the club website.
