Chris Wondolowski scored a goal on each side of halftime, Nos. 164 and 165 for Major League Soccer's all-time goals leader, in the San Jose Earthquakes' 2-0 win over visiting Real Salt Lake on Wednesday night.

The Earthquakes (7-8-6, 27 points) moved into seventh place in the Western Conference with only two match dates left in the regular season. The top eight finishers make the playoffs.

Ninth-place Real Salt Lake (5-8-7, 22 points) missed a chance to move into the top eight and have just one win in their last seven matches. RSL had more possession of the ball but fewer shots, nine to San Jose's 13.

San Jose took a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute on Wondolowski's 25th career goal in October. It came off Cristian Espinoza's shot that glanced off the far post, with the rebound coming out to the ageless Wondolowski for the finish.

Wondolowski, 37, almost picked up a second goal in the 28th minute. Nick Lima's cross found him in front of the goal, and Wondolowski put a shot on net that RSL goalkeeper Andrew Putna somehow knocked away.

Wondolowski shouted in dismay. But he celebrated in the 74th minute, squaring up a slow-rolling cross from fellow veteran Shea Salinas for his second goal of the night.

Marcelo Silva just missed the tying goal in the 41st minute, heading down a corner kick off an Earthquakes player and toward the net, where Quakes goalie James Marcinkowski got a hand on the ball. The slight deflection knocked the ball off the post, and San Jose was able to clear.

The Quakes had allowed a league-high 45 goals this season, but they registered a clean sheet against Real Salt Lake. Marcinkowski picked up his fourth shutout of the season without making a save. Putna finished with three saves.

Real Salt Lake have just two regular-season matches left, they will need at least one win to have a chance at the playoffs.
